How to ask for a referral

A short, honest note that makes it easy for a stranger to say yes.

Say which role and why you fit

Name the role, then give two or three facts that match it: the skills it asks for that you really use, and how long you have worked in the area. Keep it to a few sentences.

On ReferMap, the request form can draft this from your profile. Read it, change it and make it yours before you send.

What to leave out

Do not put email addresses, phone numbers or links in the note. They are hidden until the employee accepts, and a message that tries to move the chat elsewhere is flagged. Never offer money or gifts. Payments between people are not allowed.

Be easy to help

Keep your profile current, point to the exact role, and say thank you whatever the answer. An employee who declines is not saying anything about you. They may already have referred someone for that opening.
